Nothing seems to hold my ten-year-old nephew’s attention and interest more than high-stakes TV game shows. He especially enjoys watching the drama of the wildly popular and longtime favorite, The Price Is Right. The rush and emotions of audience members and contestants trying to guess the prices of retail items really rouses his curiosity. So exciting are these game show experiences that he loudly cheers and leaps for joy in celebration whenever a contestant advances or wins. In contrast, his super high expectations lead to deep disappointment after a contestant is unsuccessful.


Even though I don’t share the same enthusiasm and excitement for The Price Is Right that my nephew does, I do understand his eager expectations in life. Expectations drive behavior and nowhere is this issue demonstrated more clearly than when setting prices. Set prices too high, and they might not be affordable to your target market. Set your prices too low, and you might reduce your margin for profit. Therefore, setting prices ‘right’ is extremely important to a business. Parylene is frequently regarded as the high-performance solution for conformal coatings. Micron-for-micron it ranks superior because of its unique properties. There’s no denying that Parylene coating can cost more than liquid conformal coatings, but it typically outperforms them. Conventional wisdom suggests that liquid conformal coatings provide reasonable coverage and cost less. Although Parylene is usually more expensive, it is most likely to be more effective and can provide the better value in the long run. The Key Factors That Drive the Cost of Parylene:

  • Equipment Cost. Requires a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process that is a more expensive coating system in comparison to liquid coatings such as, acrylic (AR), urethane (UR), silicone (SR) and epoxy (ER). The specialized vacuum deposition equipment helps production run more smoothly.
  • Material Cost. Parylene dimer (powder form) is determined by choice of coating, which is usually C or N. Required application of masking tape and/or dots will add to the cost as well.
  • Labor Cost. Masking is more time-consuming and labor-intensive due to complex parts that must be adequately sealed to ensure that it is airtight. The complicated deposition process in a vacuum chamber requires skill and knowledge.
  • Process Cost. Items are typically put into either a horizontal or vertical chamber during the coating run. The more items on each run process, the lower the total cost will be.
